Houston Life kicks off opening day at 2026 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo

HOUSTON – Let’s Rodeo, Houston!

Opening day at Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Rodeo felt like a hometown celebration with new experiences around every corner. From traditional charrería performances to a brand-new fine-dining pop-up, Houston Life was live at NRG Park to bring viewers the best of what’s new in 2026.

Derrick Shore, Tessa Barrera, Lauren Kelly and Melanie Camp walked the grounds, met local makers and caught up with rodeo royalty — all in one action-packed show. Here’s a look at what they found at this year’s rodeo.

Charrería: Mexico’s national sport comes to Houston

One of the most exciting introductions this year is charrería, the national sport of Mexico. We met the man bringing this fast-action roping and carefully crafted horsemanship to a new generation of Houston fans. The athleticism, tradition and pageantry of the charro performances added international flair to opening day and gave families a fresh, high-energy reason to visit the grounds.

Rodeo royalty and hometown pride

We went behind the scenes with Reanna Santos, 2025 Miss Rodeo Texas, who’s using her platform to grow cowboy culture in Houston and beyond. Reanna shared how she’s soaking up every moment of her hometown rodeo while promoting community programs and youth outreach that keep rodeo traditions thriving.

Local makers: custom hats and culinary stars

Houston’s own Gonzales Hat Company is a must-see in the Heights — what started as a hobby to make one perfect cowboy hat turned into a business with a waiting list. Cowboy fashion meets craftsmanship as customers line up months in advance for custom work.

Rodeo dining is always a big attraction

The new 1932 Cattleman’s Club by Fertitta Entertainment brings steakhouse energy to NRG Park with prime steaks, elevated cocktails, live music and a master sommelier on site.

Plus, Lauren Kelly had a special peek at Mama Tina’s Gumbo with Tina Knowles — a fan favorite even among celebrities like Lizzo.

From heritage sports to high-end dining, opening day made it clear: RODEOHOUSTON keeps evolving while staying true to the traditions Houstonians of all ages love to experience year after year.
