Houston – Houston rappers are known for their music, their presence, and the mark they’ve made on the culture, but many of them also make giving back a priority, and this weekend, one of the city’s most recognizable voices is doing just that. Slim Thug joined us in Studio B to share details about his annual holiday bash and toy drive, presented in partnership with fast-food chain Checkers.
Slim Thug said giving back has always been part of his routine. He explained that he and Checkers try to team up at least once a quarter for community projects, whether it’s supporting schools, hosting back-to-school drives, or putting on a holiday event. He said they missed a few years of working together, but now that the partnership is rolling again, they’re able to make a bigger impact.
This year’s holiday bash supports BEAR, which stands for Be A Resource. The organization provides essential items and comfort to children involved with CPS. Slim Thug said something as simple as a new toy can completely change a child’s day.
The event is also packed with fun. Attendees can expect a DJ, snow on site, photos with the Grinch, and even a visit from “Santa Slim.” Everyone who donates a toy will receive a coupon for a free meal at Checkers, including Slim Thug’s signature combo meal. Guests will also get a limited signed photo during the meet and greet.
Slim Thug also shared a little about his life outside of music and giving back. He talked about his regular runs at Memorial Park and how fitness is part of his daily routine. He said he tries to get out there almost every day, even if it’s just for a walk or a few miles before heading into the studio or back into community work.
If you would like to take part, Santa Slim’s Holiday Bash and Toy Drive takes place this Saturday from 1 to 4 p.m. at the Checkers on Jones Road. If you can’t make it out in person, KPRC 2 is also partnering with BEAR to help collect gifts for children across Houston.
