Small but mighty dog stars in children’s book to help fight heartworm disease

Houston – Pat and Howard London have been married for 37 years, so they know a thing or two about love.

For a decade they loved Aggie, their four-legged friend who brought joy to their lives. When Aggie passed away and crossed the Rainbow Bridge, the Londons were at a loss for words. They decided to foster during their grieving process. Pat and Howard visited the Houston Humane Society and found Lucky. They didn’t intend to fall in love so quickly with him, but they did.

The Londons took in Lucky knowing he was battling heartworm disease. Heartworm disease affects an animal’s health and quality of life, but it is preventable and curable.

His adoption was official in 2022 and thanks to the determination of Pat, Howard, and the veterinary staff at the Houston Humane Society, Lucky made a full recovery.

The Londons recently authored a children’s book called “Lucky the Poochipug.” The name Poochipug came from Lucky being a mixed breed of poodle, chihuahua, and pug! Now heartworm-free, Lucky’s story serves as a reminder that heart health extends not only to humans but also to our furry family members.

Pat and Howard’s optimism, and passion for animal wellness inspired them to give back with “Lucky the Poochipug”.

The couple and Lucky were joined by Macey Staes with the Houston Humane Society who added that the collaboration ensures shelter animals continue to receive the critical care they need. A portion of the proceeds goes toward the Houston Humane Society’s heartworm fund. The book will soon be published in Spanish!

The shelter is running a special for the entire month of April at their wellness clinic for Heartworm Awareness Month. You can receive a free heartworm test with the purchase of six months’ worth of preventatives.

The shelter is also gearing up for its 42nd annual K9 Fun Run + Walk at Mason Park on May 18. There will be a vendor village, carnival games, and a Houston Humane Society alumni parade featuring Lucky! You might even see some familiar KPRC 2 faces.
