Here’s some advice for couples to maintain a healthy marriage during National Marriage Week

Houston – We’re in the middle of National Marriage Week and our guest, Kaity Rodriguez gave us a lot of advice on ways to maintain a healthy marriage. Hint hint, a six-second kiss could save your marriage.

Kaity is a licensed therapist, speaker and author. She’s the founder of Serenity Wellness and Therapy Services.

February, the love month, is right around the corner and many Houston residents will be putting a bit more effort into their relationships. She came on to remind us all that while we prepare for Valentine’s Day, she sees this as an opportunity to shift the focus from candy and flowers and instead educate Houston residents on building a strong marriage.

Here are some suggestions that she shared with us, using the acronym “MAP”.

Meetings- weekly meetings to share needs, wins and concerns.

Accountability- take accountability over being defensive.

Plan Rituals- Plan a daily ritual to engage in as a couple.

We’re all busy, what if we just can’t find the time to plan meetings or rituals? Do you have six seconds? Plan a time of day where you and your partner can smooch for six seconds? what about a 5 minute coffee talk in the morning? Scheduling time with one another is important, even if it’s for a little while.

She also shared with us, the four signs that a relationship is likely to end. They are:

1. Criticism

2. Stonewalling

3. Defensiveness

4. Contempt

We recommend keeping up with Kaity because she’s currently blogging about her “100 Dates in Houston.” It’s a dating blog series chronicling her journey as a thirty-something woman on a quest to 100 dates in Houston, Texas.

The goal? To connect with the love of her life. She hope it doesn’t take that long but she’s prepared.
