Chris Shepherd’s Houston-area burger picks include a hot new spot and a 50-year classic

Watch this ‘Eat Like a Local’ today at 10 a.m. on KPRC 2

In this episode of “Eat Like a Local”, it’s a celebration of Houston’s burger culture. Host Chris Shepherd checks out a buzzy newcomer and a beloved classic that’s been flipping patties for decades.

Boo’s Burgers | 2510 Navigation, Houston

Chris follows the local foodie buzz to Boo’s Burgers, the new destination everyone’s talking about — and for good reason. What started as a beloved pop-up has found a permanent home in the esplanade along Navigation Boulevard.

The star of the show is the Boo’s OG — a smashburger built on attention to detail and quality ingredients that hint at just how serious this kitchen is about its craft.

That careful execution also extends to its non-burger offerings too. The Shroom Sammie, a fried oyster mushroom sandwich with lemon pepper wet seasoning makes Boo’s a great stop for vegetarians and meat eaters alike.

Boo’s Burgers is open Wednesday to Sunday. Check the hours on their website before you go.

Tookie’s|406 Texas Ave., Kemah

After Boo’s, Chris cruises down to Kemah for a burger that’s been a standard in the Bay Area for 50 years. Tookie’s has been serving burgers since 1975, and while trends have come and gone, this local institution has kept things fresh without losing its soul.

Their house-pressed beef patties are cooked fresh daily, then dressed with crisp lettuce, tomato, onion, pickle, and mayo. If you love a classic, the Tookie’s cheeseburger is for you, but they haven’t rested on the tried and true.

Tookie’s keeps things interesting with an evolving menu of dressed up burgers like The Squealer with bacon blended into the beef patty and the Rodeo Burger - a beef patty marinated in BBQ sauce and topped with thin, crispy onion rings.

Speaking of onion rings, Chris becomes an onion ring convert after trying both options at Tookie’s — Mamma Ethel’s onion rings and the hula hoops. Watch the video to see if Chris can choose a clear winner, plus see the sweet way everyone should end their meal at Tookie’s!
