Toshiba expecting $4.5 billion in losses, and other business news

Toshiba is still reeling from an accounting scandal that inflated profits.

The electronics giant is now expecting to post a $4.5 billion loss this year as it deals with the aftermath of the scandal. The estimated loss is significantly higher than expected. Some of that is associated with a huge restructuring plan as Toshiba cuts about 6,800 jobs in its consumer electronics division by the end of March and another 1,000 employees at its headquarters in Japan.

In other business news, 39 percent of Americans have not visited a bank or a credit union in the past six months, according to a new study from BankRate.com. That’s up 5 percent from just two years ago. Experts attribute the rise to mobile banking.
