Houston Humane Society releases dog safety tips

HOUSTON – Following Monday's dog mauling in League City, the Houston Humane Society put together information to keep in mind when you are approached by an unknown dog or bitten.

When approached by a dog you fear may attack:

  • Make like a tree! Hold yourself as still as possible, arms at your sides and avoid direct eye contact with the dog.
  • Don't flee!  Avoid the urge to run screaming away.  Dogs instinctively give chase.
  • Back away slowly.  Once the dog loses interest in you, back up slowly until you are out of sight.
  • Curl into a ball.  If you are knocked to the ground or fall, curl into a ball and shield your face and ears with your hands.  Remain as still as possible and refrain from rolling around and making noise.
  • In the event of an attack, "feed" the dog anything you can.  Use your jacket, purse, a stick, even your bicycle.

If bitten by a dog:

  • Contact emergency personnel immediately if the wounds are critical.
  • For less severe wounds, clean the area with soap and warm water and consult your physician.
  • Report the incident as soon as possible to your local animal control agency and police department.  Be prepared to provide a description of the animal, location of the incident, any pet ownership information you may have and tell which direction the animal went.
