Authorities say a mother and her child were both injured after they were attacked by a pit bull in League City.

Officials say the attack happened around 8:45 a.m. Monday at the Avana at Southshore Apartments off E. League City Parkway.

League City police responded to the scene to find the dog actively attacking the girl as her mother tried to protect her.

"Our officers responded out there to the apartment complex and got into the apartment and found the dog, a pit bull was still attacking them," said Officer Reagan Pena with the League City Police Department. "Our officers had to shoot the dog in order to stop it."

Police say the mother, 23-year-old Chelsi Camp,  was taken by ambulance to the same hospital with injuries to her hands and arms.

"Obviously she was trying to prevent the dog from attacking her child," said Pena. " And the child was transported with severe head and face injuries."

Life Flight was called to transport the 2-year-old girl to Memorial Hermann Hospital where she remains in critical condition.

Police say Camp was pet sitting for her boyfriend when she and her daughter were brutally attacked.

Neighbors say Camp works in the apartment complex office.

"I know her. She's a wonderful person and her little girl is a sweetheart," said neighbor Maria DuBose.
