Heat advisory in effect Thursday:

The combination of heat and humidity will reach dangerous levels Thursday. Once the heat index climbs to 108° or higher across more than just a few isolated areas, a Heat Advisory goes into effect.

The advisory begins at noon Thursday and runs through 7 p.m. Friday. Most likely, it will be extended as the heat continues.

The actual air temperature will be hot on its own, with Houston expected to reach 100°. And the triple-digit heat could stick around through Tuesday of next week. This is going to be a long stretch of dangerous heat.

No end in sight to this unrelenting heat:

The heat is courtesy of a strong ridge of high pressure. This ridge is bringing sinking air into Houston, and as that air sinks, it gets compressed and heats up.

This pattern shows no signs of letting up through the weekend. While there is a small chance of rain Saturday, it’s not enough of a change in the overall weather pattern to bring temperatures down in any meaningful way.

In other words, the heat is here to stay.

Triple-digit heat:

It’s possible Thursday could mark the start of a five or six-day streak of triple-digit temperatures. And even if we come up a degree or two short of 100°, it won’t make much difference when it comes to how it feels.

The afternoon heat index will still climb into the 108° to 110° range, keeping the heat dangerous regardless of whether the actual temperature reaches 100°.

Tracking the tropics:

We have entered the busiest 45-day stretch of our hurricane season. But because of intense wind shear over the Atlantic Basin, there is no tropical activity expected for the next 7 days!

10 Day Forecast:

We’re in for one of the hottest stretches of the summer.

There is a small chance of rain Saturday, but don’t expect it to provide much relief. The strong ridge of high pressure finally begins to break down in the middle of next week, but temperatures won’t drop dramatically.

The heat may ease a bit, but summer isn’t giving up just yet.
