Driving back from The Great Texas Eclipse? Here’s why you want to pay close attention to the weather FILE Photo - Cars in line during traffic (AP Photo/David J. Phillip) (David J. Phillip, Copyright 2022 The Associated Press. All rights reserved.)
HOUSTON – Are you heading out of town to see the Eclipse? If so, expect to see heavy traffic as you head back to Houston. With an influx of tourists throughout Texas, drivers could see more delays later today.
But the weather is the greatest consideration if you’re on the roads. We’ve got a tornado watch through 8 p.m. in areas north of Houston , including Brazos, Burleson, Grimes, Houston, Madison, Montgomery, Polk, San Jacinto, Trinity, Walker and Washington Counties.
The severe weather is expected to make for a messy commute on IH-10 and US-290 .
If you are heading back to Houston from Austin, San Antonio, or the Hill Country, even though they may be busier, the main roads may also be safer than backroads for easy access to rest stops, food and safety if you need to seek shelter at any point.
Here are a few tips to keep in mind:
Inspect your car before you hit the road
Turn on your headlights
Plan your route and give yourself extra time
Double your normal following distance
Never use cruise control in wet conditions
If things get rough, pull over!
Be sure to cruise with composure and avoid distractions behind the wheel!
