Trick or treat safety: Ways to protect your children on Halloween

HOUSTON – Hey Hou,

Since Halloween is almost here, you’ll most likely notice more foot traffic in your neighborhood starting this weekend. Also, major construction in the City of Iowa Colony is currently in progress!

SH-288 Road Work

Heads up! Starting Saturday, you will notice a continuous closure at the north and southbound SH-288 connector ramp to the I-610 South Loop heading eastbound. This closure is a part of the ongoing Texas Clear Lanes project at I-610/Cambridge Street. Construction teams will be working on a new SH-288 connector ramp to I-610. You can expect to see this major closure until February.

If you’re traveling in the city of Iowa Colony, you may have noticed a few construction zones and road closures. This week, both Tuesday and Wednesday, there was a complete closure on SH-288 at Meridiana Parkway. According to the city, the closure was necessary to install the bridge spans as a part of the Meridiana Parkway overpass expansion project.

In addition to this closure, last week the northbound lanes of SH-288 at Iowa Colony Blvd were diverted to the newly created road. This detour is expected to be in place for an extended period of time while crews build the new lanes of SH-288. If you head out this weekend you will not only notice this diversion, but the same will be done for traffic heading in those southbound lanes starting Friday, Oct. 27.

Halloween Roadway Safety

Halloween falls on a Tuesday this year! Children all over the Houston area will put on their costumes and hit the streets to trick or treat. While this is one of the sweetest days of the year for children, the reality is kids are three times more likely to be struck and killed by a car on Halloween. Often times, costumes can be dark, kids are less visible from cars, and more foot traffic will be on the roads. So, keep this in mind and driver slow through residential areas this weekend and Halloween night.

Have a boo-tiful Halloween!
