De Blasio had said earlier that the city was examining its legal options to end the Trump contracts. Removing the Trump name from the rinks, carousel and golf course won't erase him from New York City. He will still operate Trump Tower on Manhattan's Fifth Avenue and the Trump International Hotel on Central Park West.

The president and first lady Melania Trump changed their legal residence from New York City to Palm Beach last year. Trump purchased Mar-a-Lago for $10 million in 1985 from the estate of Marjorie Merriweather Post, the owner of General Foods. Before he became president, Trump and the town often clashed over the club's operation. He unsuccessfully sued Palm Beach County because jetliners taking off from the nearby international airport flew over the mansion. Palm Beach is one of Florida's most exclusive towns, with a median home price of over a million dollars.

The warnings were sounded after a Memorial Day weekend that saw many people emerge from stay-at-home orders to go to the beach, restaurants and family gatherings.
