A $617 million investment is coming to Harris County as NRG Energy plans a new 455-megawatt natural gas plant at its Greens Bayou facility — a project state leaders say will strengthen the Texas power grid and support continued growth in the Houston area.

NRG Energy, Inc. (NRG) is bringing a new natural gas power plant to Chambers County.

The low-interest loan to NRG Energy for a gas-fired power plant is the largest of three loans approved through the $7 billion fund since its creation in 2023.

"Our partnership with the World Cup Houston Host Committee marks an important moment for NRG and the city of Houston," said Gin Kinney, NRG Chief Administrative Officer in a statement.

Shares are lower in Asia after benchmarks fell again on Wall Street on fears the Federal Reserve will need to keep the brakes on the economy to get inflation under control, risking a sharp recession.

NRG Energy announced Thursday that it will relocate their corporate headquarters to Houston from New Jersey.
