Jake Meyers had the last of three singles as part of Houston’s eighth-inning rally against former teammate Joe Smith, scoring Kyle Tucker with the go-ahead run and sending the Astros over the Seattle Mariners 4-3 on Monday night. Dylan Moore had a pinch-hit, two-run homer for Seattle in the sixth for a 3-2 lead.

Astros planning to be without reliever Joe Smith this season
HOUSTON Manager Dusty Baker doesnt expect reliever Joe Smith to play for the Houston Astros this season. Smith has not reported to camp because of what general manager James Click called concerns for the safety of his family. Smith was placed on the restricted list Tuesday night, but he has not said publicly if he is opting out of the season, which starts for the Astros on July 24. The 36-year-old Smith has spent the last two seasons with the Astros and signed a two-year, $8 million contract to stay with the team this off-season. He missed part of last season recovering from an Achilles tendon injury, but returned to appear in 28 games with a 1.80 ERA.
Dusty Baker names Justin Verlander opening day starter against Seattle
Its official but really the Astros opening day starter role was never in doubt. Manager Dusty Baker announced after Wednesdays practice that 2019 AL Cy Young winner Justin Verlander will get the nod when the Astros open the season July 24 at Minute Maid Park against the Seattle Mariners. Baker has been impressed with the way Verlander has put himself in a position to continue to dominate. Baker also addressed the Astros rotation after Verlander indicating that right now Lance McCullers Jr. is ahead of Zack Greinke and perhaps could start game two against the Mariners. McCullers, fresh off five shutout innings on Tuesday in a scrimmage, could get the start July 25th.

Papa John's stock jumped more than 3% in premarket trading Wednesday after the pizza chain announced an executive reshuffle and reported quarterly revenue that topped Wall Street's estimates. He will remain in the role until Papa John's finds a successor. The departures come as Papa John's switches up its management structure. Prior to joining Papa John's to replace CEO Steve Ritchie, he was president of Arby's.

Astros Sweep in D.C. Head Home One-Win Shy of a Title: Four Takeaways
On Sunday, after two home losses in the World Series, the Astros completed a three-game sweep of the Washington Nationals in D.C. with a 7-1 win, and return home to Houston to try and complete their second title in three seasons. Many struggles the Astros seemed to have through much of the postseason and certainly the first couple games of the World Series were wiped out in the nation's capital. In the end, the Astros headed for home just one win shy of their second championship. The 35-year-old veteran submarine pitcher had never been to a World Series and here he is in game five as a set up man. Overall, the Astros bats have broken out in the last three games for really the first time in the postseason.

Power of 11: Number plays significant role in Astros' 11-1 win over Athletics

In the third inning, the Astros scored their 11th run, while Armstrong was being interviewed in the booth. Yuli Gurriel hit a home run that brought him to an 11-game hitting streak, and Yordan Alvarez scored his 11th home run. I think it was very appropriate we scored 11 runs and were celebrating Apollo 11, Hinch said. Those were the only two hits as the Athletics ended a streak of 21 straight games with a home run.

Cole (11-5) yielded two hits and one run while striking out 11 to help Houston to its sixth straight win, improving to 8-1 against the Athletics this season. Cole has recorded double-digit strikeouts in three straight games, giving him an MLB-leading 205 this season. Those were the only two hits as the Athletics ended a streak of 21 straight games with a home run.
