Galveston may not have the best reputation for its murky waters, but for anglers, it appears to be one of the best places to spend time with family, especially during Father’s Day weekend.

Supporters say the massive project would protect the Galveston Bay area from dangerous storm surge, but it remains billions of dollars short of what’s needed to build the barrier.

While a majority of Houston seems to have avoided the wrath of tropical storm Alberto, Galveston residents experienced significantly elevated water levels as well as some flooding during the initial phases of the storm. As a coastal city, Galveston is no stranger to floods.

The latest figure is 68% higher than an earlier estimate of $34 billion, and it’s unclear when — or whether — Congress will appropriate the money to build the massive system of gates intended to protect the Houston region from storm surge.

The far-right congressman from Friendswood still backs the conservative push to lower spending, but worries bipartisan Texas projects have been impacted.
