HOUSTON – Road construction in Metro Houston continues in full force this weekend, with three specific locations that could cause you delays. Weekend construction at the Southwest Freeway/West Loop interchange continues this weekend. In addition, the southbound West Loop frontage road between Richmond and Westpark will be closed. The southbound feeder on the West Loop between Richmond and Westpark Drive will be closed all weekend. I-10/I-45 InterchangeThe connector ramps from eastbound and westbound I-10 to northbound I-45 will be closed this weekend.

Road construction has been a problem on the Gulf Freeway for years. A newly-expanded stretch of freeway between the Sam Houston Tolloway (Beltway 8) and NASA-1 shows the fruits of the hard labor so far. Now, the construction extends to the stretch of road running through Galveston county.

One of the largest, longest-running freeway projects in Greater Houston is the Grand Parkway. It is the outer-most loop around the metro area, with construction that has been ongoing for the past two decades. The project was first conceptualized in the early 1960s. It is divided into eleven segments, the first of which opened on August 31, 1994. That first section, Segment D, extends from the Southwest Freeway to the Katy Freeway on Houston’s southwest side.

In 2019, the West Loop between the Katy Freeway and the Southwest Freeway was named the most congested highway segment in the state of Texas, and now in the country, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The ongoing intricate, mega-sized project to rebuild the West Loop/Southwest Freeway interchange is aimed to help alleviate some of that congestion while also improving safety along this stretch of road.

Houstonians have been patiently maneuvering through the twists, turns and overall tumult of the State Highway 288 expansion project since October, 2016, when the project began.

The North Houston Highway Improvement Project (NHHIP) is slated to be the biggest construction project in a generation in the Houston area. The scope of the project is huge. It entails widening the North Freeway, I-45, from the North Sam Houston Tollway to Downtown Houston.
