A man convicted of killing eight people in metro Phoenix in 2017 has waived his presence in court as the sentencing portion of his trial began.

Lawyers made opening statements at the trial of a man charged with carrying out a string of shootings that killed eight people in the Phoenix area over a three-week span in 2017.
