Federal Court Finds Florida Tax Preparers in Contempt for Violating Court’s Preliminary Injunction
On Thursday, a federal court in the Southern District of Florida held two individuals, as well as the company they allegedly co-own, in contempt for violating a preliminary injunction that restricted their tax preparation activities. According to the complaint, defendants prepared tax returns for customers that claimed fraudulent self-employment expenses, fictitious education credits, and fake charitable contributions, among other schemes. On May 3, 2021, the United States sought an order to show cause and a temporary restraining order, alleging that Devallon, Dominique, and Tax Time Group Inc. were violating that preliminary injunction. The IRS has information on its website for choosing a tax preparer, has launched a free directory of federal tax preparers, and offers information on how to avoid “ghost” tax preparers, whose refusal to sign a return should be a red flag to taxpayers. In the past decade, the Tax Division has obtained injunctions against hundreds of unscrupulous tax preparers.justice.gov

Dominique's Q&A: Where's the Lightning in a Hurricane?
Houston, TX - After the 10pm newscast last night, Dominique asked me why hurricanes don't have lightning? Some do, as we'll get to, but the simple answer is the structure: hurricane winds are on a horizontal trajectory, spiraling inward toward the center and for thunderstorms (and lightning) to develop you need vertical structure. What that means is fast rising air UPWARD into the sky where ice and rain collide in the cold air to create lightning as opposed to a hurricane's horizontal winds. NOAA has also studied the 2005 hurricanes, Katrina, Rita and Emily which all became CAT 5 storms in the Gulf and Caribbean and displayed lightning:That's Hurricane Emily above and you can see the + and - signs indicating lightning. Positive strokes, by the way, form at the top of storms and travel a long way down so tend to be meaner strikes of lightning!
