Michigan sees virus surge, but tighter restrictions unlikely
The infection resurgence is being fueled by loosened restrictions, a more infectious variant and pandemic fatigue. Another man died at a health-care facility after a lack of water pressure made medical treatment impossible. ___OKLAHOMA CITY -- Oklahoma City Mayor David Holt pleaded with residents Thursday to limit water usage after city officials said some hospitals faced what Holt called a crisis because of a sharp drop in water pressure. Integris Baptist lost water pressure at two of its hospitals, according to city utilities director Chris Browning. The drop in water pressure was due largely to customers running faucets to prevent frozen and burst water lines, and nearly tripling the amount of water used, according to city utilities director Chris Browning. Birmingham jail logs with MLK signatures up for sale

Governor offers help to Alabama towns hit by killer tornado

Home will never be the same after a tornado smashed the structure into pieces, killed another teen and left the community devastated in the middle of the night. The National Weather Service said the twister was an EF- 3 with 150 mph (241 kph) winds, capable of severely damaging well-constructed buildings. Last year, Alabama had 78 tornadoes, which was more than Kansas and Oklahoma combined. โAs soon as we got in there it hit, and it all came down on top of us,โ Williams said.

At least 30 people were injured as the tornado carved a 10-mile (16-kilometer) path through Birmingham's northern suburbs, an area severely damaged by a much larger tornado a decade ago. Sobbing, Patti Herring was shaken and as she picked through the debris looking for a missing cat and her late mother's cherished belongings. Fultondale Fire Chief Justin McKenzie said 18 of the 30 people injured had to go to hospital. โThe people of Fultondale took a hard hit last night โ Iโm grieved over the loss of life, injuries, homes & damaged businesses," Alabama Gov. โSadly, here in Fultondale we are very experienced with this kind of thing,โ fire chief McKenzie said.

World War II vet beats COVID-19, marks 104th birthday
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. โ An Alabama man who spent World War II repairing bomb-damaged trains in France recovered from a fight with COVID-19 in time to mark his 104th birthday on Thursday. Major Wooten was physically drained and a little fuzzy mentally after battling the new coronavirus but appears to be on the mend, said granddaughter Holley Wooten McDonald. She said her mother recovered from COVID-19, and so did a sister who developed the illness and had to spend a week on a ventilator. In the spring, he was hospitalized with serious heart problems and recovered, McDonald said. For Wooten's birthday, a company erected a yard display that included the Alabama athletics logo, a cake, candles and a patriotic hat.

1963 church bombing survivor seeks apology, restitution
More than a dozen sticks of dynamite planted by Ku Klux Klansmen exploded at a Birmingham church in 1963, killing four Black girls. George Wallace, at the time encouraged the racial violence that led to one of the most infamous acts of the civil rights era. The blast killed Denise McNair, 11, and three 14-year-olds: Carole Robertson, Cynthia Wesley, and Addie Mae Collins, who was Rudolphโs sister. Rudolph recalled that she and her sister had gone to the washroom to freshen up after walking to church. After the bombing, Rudolph for years lived anonymously.
England's second city tightens restrictions as virus spikes
โIt is about household mixing,โ he said. The other nations of the U.K. โ Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland โ have also announced similar restrictions on gatherings. Over the past week, the number of confirmed cases in the U.K. has spiked dramatically. The daily increase has been running at near 3,000 for much of this week, around double the number the previous week. The U.K. has Europeโs worst death toll from the virus, with just over 41,600 deaths within 28 days of testing positive.

Man charged in Alabama mall shooting that left boy, 8, dead
HOOVER, Ala. A man has been arrested on a murder charge in connection with a recent shooting at an Alabama shopping mall that left an 8-year-old boy dead and three other people injured, authorities said Sunday. Hoover police announced the arrest of Montez Coleman, 22, in connection with the shooting Friday afternoon the Riverchase Galleria Mall. The boy was identified by police as Royta Giles Jr., a rising third grader at a local elementary school. The shooting of 21-year-old Emantic EJ Bradford Jr. prompted a series of protests at the mall. The Alabama attorney generals office cleared the officer, saying he acted reasonably under the circumstances in that encounter.
