Banksy artwork sells for almost $10 million at auction

In the 2005 work, Banksy added abandoned shopping carts and an orange traffic cone to Claude Monet’s image of water lilies in his garden at Giverny. Another Banksy work, “Devolved Parliament,” sold last year at Sotheby’s in London for 9.9 million pounds.
Banksy loses EU trademark fight with greeting card company
BRUSSELS – Street artist Banksy has lost a legal battle with a a greeting card company along with a European Union trademark for one of his most iconic artworks. The decision, which can be appealed, followed a dispute between U.K. greeting card company Full Colour Black Ltd. and the company that authenticates and handles requests dealing with Banksy's work, Pest Control Office Ltd. The greeting card company also noted that Banksy wrote in one of his books that “copyright is for losers." After Full Colour Black started legal proceedings, Banksy opened an online store called Gross Domestic Product to sell his own range of merchandise. The contested (trademark) was filed in order for Banksy to have legal rights over the sign as he could not rely on copyright rights, but that is not a function of a trademark."
Rembrandt self-portrait sells for $18.7 million at Sothebys
(AP) A self-portrait by Rembrandt sold for 14.5 million pounds ($18.7 million) at a Sotheby's virtual auction Tuesday a record price for a self-portrait by the Dutch master, the auctioneer's said. It fell within the 12 to 16 million pounds estimate. The last self-portrait by Rembrandt to appear at auction was sold for 6.9 million pounds in 2003, Sotheby's added. The top-selling item was Mirs Peinture (Femme au chapeau rouge) (Woman in a Red Hat) from 1927, which fetched 22.3 million pounds ($28.9 million). That included a bronze sculpture of a female figure by Alberto Giacometti, which fetched 10.7 million pounds ($13.8 million), doubling the estimated price.
Banksy's last COVID-19 tags scrubbed from London Tube train
LONDON Even if you are Banksy, tagging is forbidden on London's Underground. Transport for London, the transportation agency for the greater London area, scrubbed the acclaimed street artist's latest work on the subject of COVID-19 from one of its trains, erasing a visual warning on the dangers of skipping face coverings. Banksy uploaded a a 59-second video to his Instagram and YouTube pages on Tuesday that showed him spray painting on a Circle Line train. One memorable image shows a sickly rat with a runny nose that sneezes and spreads a spray of droplets across a window. Transport for London officials say the works were removed because of a strict anti-graffiti policy.
Italy returns stolen Banksy to France on Bastille Day

The chief prosecutor in charge of the investigation, Michele Renzo, told the French ambassador that it was significant that the handover was occurring on Bastille Day, given the need to continue fighting for all freedoms. Italian authorities had announced last month that they had discovered the painted door in an attic in a country home in Abruzzo. French Ambassador Christian Masset said the door was a witness to the attack but also an escape route. Thanks to this door more lives were saved.Standing next to the piece after it was unveiled, Renzo said Italy was proud to return the painting to its rightful owners.
