The long-awaited "Loki" series, which takes place after the events of "Avengers: Endgame," stars Tom Hiddleston in the title role and will feature Owen Wilson. The series centers on an alternative version of Loki that escaped the Avengers' custody during their attempted "time heist." The Marvel multiverse is just a fancy way of saying a collection of alternate universes. The Disney+ series "WandaVision," which launched on the service in January, has also begun to explore the idea of the multiverse.

The current second-highest box office haul occurred in 2016 when ticket sales rose to $11.38 billion. If ticket sales are weak in the next few days, 2019 could end up as the third-biggest year. If those films are well-received by audiences, 2020 could have a chance of catching 2018s $11.88 billion ticket sales record.

While the film industry as a whole will struggle to reach last year's $11.9 billion ticket sales record, Disney has already blasted past its best global sales mark and is inching closer to surpassing its domestic top. So far in 2019, Disney films have sold more than $8.1 billion in tickets, decimating its previous record of $7.6 billion globally. Domestically, Disney sold a record $3.09 billion worth of tickets in 2018. Disney's 2019 haul accounted for 33.4% of the U.S. box office during that period, according to data from Comscore.

"Avengers: Endgame" will take in an estimated $1.28 million domestic total this weekend, according to Deadline, which will easily push it past the mark set by "Avatar" when it was released in December 2009. The film took in $2.778 billion in its worldwide run.With the box office from this weekend, it will easily surpass "Avatar" and ring up at least $2.78 billion. "Avengers: Endgame" got a boost when it was re-released in theaters in late June after it initially premiered on April 26.
