Stellantis is telling owners of nearly 220,000 Jeep Cherokee SUVs worldwide to park them outdoors and away from other vehicles because the power liftgates can catch fire even when the engines are off. The company is recalling certain Jeep Cherokees from the 2014 through 2016 model years. Water can get into the liftgate control computer, causing an electrical short that can touch off a fire. The company says it hasn’t developed a fix yet. Owners will get notification letters starting June 30. Stellantis says the problem was caught in a routine review of customer data.

At least one company is making customers pay it back if they decide to leave for another insurer. We told you in April how a lot of insurance companies were refunding customers since roadways were virtually empty in march and April. Houstonian Kelsey Lok’s policy expired in July, but she got her refund in June as a $150 credit on her bill. In July, Lok found a better rate with a different insurance company.

HOUSTON – Auto insurers are sitting on a COVID windfall of at least $600 million dollars because of reduced driving during the pandemic. KPRC 2 reported in April how several car insurance companies offered rebates to customers averaging about $60. Nearly one in three of the top 40 auto insurers in Texas are offering no credit or refund to customers. Most of those offering no refund are companies serving higher-risk drivers with no credit or low credit scores. DETROIT – General Motors is recalling more than 814,000 pickup trucks and cars in the U.S. to fix problems with electronic brake controls and battery cables. The first recall covers nearly 464,000 Cadillac CT6 sedans and Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 pickup trucks from 2019. Dealers will reprogram the brake computer starting Jan. 27, according to documents posted Thursday on the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration website. The second recall covers over 350,000 2019 and 2020 Silverado and Sierra 1500 pickups. Starting Jan. 27, dealers will inspect the cables and clean the connectors if needed.
