Soyuz spacecraft lands safely with US-Russian crew from space station

A NASA astronaut who launched to the International Space Station 50 years to the day after the first astronauts landed on the moon has safely returned to Earth on the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 splashdown. Fred Haise is a former U.S. Air Force and Marine Corps pilot and NASA astronaut most famous for his role as the lunar module pilot for the nearly-catastrophic Apollo 13 mission. Houston, we've had a delay: Apollo 13 50th celebrations rescheduled

The celebrations scheduled for the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 13 mission have been delayed or replanned in response to the coronavirus pandemic. The flight plans had been filed, the logistics confirmed and the countdown was on to celebrate the 50th anniversary of NASA's Apollo 13 mission. The Cosmosphere in Hutchinson, Kansas, home to the Apollo 13 command module Odyssey (pictured), has rescheduled its Apollo 13 mission debrief and gala for November 2020. In addition to supporting the new multimedia website "Apollo 13 in Real Time," the agency will premiere a new documentary short on its television channel and website, "Apollo 13: Home Safe," at 8 p.m. EDT on Friday, April 10. Planned for April 11, the reception and dinner program was to feature Griffin, Lunney, Windler, astronaut and Apollo 13 support crew member Vance Brand and actor Clint Howard, who was in the 1995 movie "Apollo 13."

Jack Swigert: Apollo 13 command module pilot

Jack Swigert was a last-minute replacement on the Apollo 13 crew. John "Jack" Swigert was a test pilot, aerospace engineer, politician and NASA astronaut who was most famous for his role as the command module pilot of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission in 1970. Swigert joined the Apollo 13 crew three days before launch time, after the original command module pilot, Ken Mattingly, was exposed to rubella. After the Apollo 1 fire in 1967, Worden and Swigert were assigned to help work on improving the Apollo command module spacecraft. He had been part of the support crew for Apollo 7 in 1968, and was initially Apollo 13's backup command module pilot.

Jim Lovell: NASA astronaut and Apollo 13 commander

He's most famous for his role as commander of the ill-fated Apollo 13 mission that so nearly ended in tragedy. In 1994, Lovell worked with journalist Jeffrey Kluger to write a book about Lovell's career and the Apollo 13 mission. The book, "Lost Moon: The Perilous Voyage of Apollo 13" (Houghton Mifflin, 1994), spurred the 1995 movie "Apollo 13," starring actor Tom Hanks. Isle of Man marks Apollo 13 50th with new 'One Giant Leap' stamps

The Isle of Man Post Office's new "One Giant Leap, Exploring the Moon and Space" postage stamps celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 13 mission and the exploration that followed. The postage features a photo of the Apollo 13 mission control room and scenes from the four successful lunar landings that followed the ill-fated mission to the moon. "Many missions came before and came after Apollo 11," said Nicole Stott, a former space shuttle and space station astronaut. The Apollo 13 and Apollo 14 stamps are Isle of Man First Class mail value, the Apollo 15 and Apollo 16 stamps are European Union value, the Apollo 17 and Skylab stamps are large letter value and the space shuttle and International Space Station stamps are "rest of the world" value. The Isle of Man Post Office is also planning to offer covers autographed by moonwalker Charlie Duke and by Stott (prices to be announced).

'Apollo 13' launching back into theaters for NASA moonshot's 50th anniversary

Lunar landing artifacts on display at Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum

One of the biggest collections is at the Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum in Washington, D.C.From the big to the small, the artifacts there tell the story of the daring first manned mission to the moon's surface. Items included the data acquisition camera that was mounted in the window of the lunar module and captured the moon landing. That was actually part of the first meal on the moon," Muir-Harmony said. You'll see that this is largely a converted Airstream trailer," said Margaret Wietekamp, the curator for the Space History Department for the National Air & Space Museum. "So the museum has a wonderful, best in the nation, collection of Apollo lunar suits," Wietekamp said.

Lunar landing artifacts on display at Smithsonian National Air & Space Museum
