HOUSTON - Houston Astros second baseman Jose Altuve and first baseman Yuli Gurriel have both earned player of the month honors from Major League Baseball.
Altuve was named the American League Player of the Month.
Gurriel was named the American League Rookie of the Month.
Altuve hit .485 during his historic July.
Among his 48 hits, he recorded 10 doubles, one triple, four homers, 21 RBI and a 1.251 OPS in 23 games.
His .485 average was the fifth-highest by a MLB player in any calendar month since 1961.
Altuve rode a 19-game hitting streak during the month from July 2 through July 23.
Altuve was named the AL Player of the Week of July 3 - 9. During that week, he became the ninth player in MLB history to record a streak of five consecutive three-hit games.
Altuve's .485 batting average is an Astros record for a single calendar month, topping Richard Hidalgo's .476 average in September of 2000.
Gurriel led all American League rookies with 28 hits, 9 doubles, 20 RBI, a .565 slugging percentage and .899 OPS.
He tied Lance Berkman's club record for most doubles in a single month by a rookie.
It is Gurriel's first career monthly award and Altuve's second. Altuve was named the AL Player of the Month in June 2016.
