HOUSTON – Texans reserve defensive tackle Tommy Togiai does a lot of things right, especially being a consistent physical presence at the line of scrimmage.

He had one sack in the preseason.

The former Cleveland Browns fourth-round draft pick from Ohio State joined the Texans last season and played in eight games, recording 28 tackles, 1 1/2 sacks and two tackles for losses. He’s an example of the outstanding depth for the Texans on defense. At age 25, too, Togiai is one of the younger and stronger defensive linemen on the roster. He bench pressed 225 pounds 40 times, ran a 4.98 in the 40-yard dash and had a 32-inch vertical leap at his campus Pro Day.

Togiai was promoted to the active roster from the practice squad in November last year and signed a one-year extension. He had one sack in the playoffs last season.

“Tommy has been the same guy since he first came to our practice squad, just Mr. Consistent,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said. “When the coaches ask him to do it a certain way, he’s going to do it that way. He makes plays because of that. He’s not wowing anyone by what he does, but he’s consistent and he shows up and he’s very productive.

“When you look at the stat sheet after the game, Tommy is going to show up. He factors in on a ton of plays, even though it may not be flashy, he’s going to be very productive. There’s something to be said for that. I love guys who operate in that manner and Tommy is one of them. A guy you can count on, you know what he’s going to do every single time. He’s not going to try to freelance or do something out of the realm of what we ask him to do, reliable, steady guy who’s going to make plays.”
