David Bailiff out as Rice University head football coach, sources say

HOUSTON – The college football coaching carousel continues to roll and Monday it reached Rice University.

Sources tell KPRC 2 that head coach David Bailiff is out after 11 seasons, following a just-completed 1-11 campaign. It was a season in which the Owls lost 14 starters to injuries.

Bailiff was informed of the change when he met with Joe Karlgaard, the university's athletic director, on Monday morning, according to a source close to the Rice program.

Bailiff took over at Rice in 2007, coming from Texas State. His tenure included a 10-win year in 2008 that led to a Texas Bowl victory in Houston.

Bailiff's era included peaks and valleys, but until now he had managed to bounce back from the lows. His highs included a stretch of three consecutive bowl games and the CUSA title in 2013.

The past three seasons the Owls were just 9-27.

Karlgaard will begin an immediate search for a new head coach, sources said.
