The shooting was reported about 9:30 p.m. at a home on Southminster Drive near Rampart Street.

Houston police said the woman's roommate was robbed earlier in the evening, so the woman decided to teach her 14-year-old niece how to handle her gun. She accidentally pulled the trigger during the lesson, and the shot hit the girl's pinky finger and leg, police said.

Police said the girl was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

The case will be presented to a grand jury to determine if charges should be filed, police said.

Editor's note: This story has been corrected to show that police say the aunt is the person who pulled the trigger.
