The application period for Housing Alliance HTX’s public housing waitlists has officially closed after thousands of Houstonians applied for affordable housing.

The waitlist application period for eight public housing properties ended at 12:01 a.m. Tuesday, with approximately 56,000 applicants selecting up to three waitlists for available units.

The waitlists include the following properties:

  • Kelly Village
  • Lincoln Park
  • Long Drive
  • Oxford Place
  • Bellerive
  • Lyerly
  • Independence Heights
  • Irvinton Village

Housing Alliance HTX officials said the overwhelming response highlights the continued demand for affordable housing in the Houston area.

“The sheer number of applicants demonstrates the broad need for affordable housing across Houston,” said Kelly Haines, senior vice president for asset management at Housing Alliance HTX. “If you have questions about your application or waitlist status, please reach out to us via phone, email or in-person.”

The agency will now use a random lottery to determine which applicants are placed on the public housing waitlists.

However, applicants who were already on the Housing Choice Voucher (Section 8) waitlist and submitted the required consent form will not participate in the lottery. Instead, they will be added to the public housing waitlists based on the date and time their completed consent form was received.

Housing Alliance HTX expects about 10,000 of the 56,000 applicants will ultimately be placed on the waitlists.

Officials noted that being placed on a waitlist does not guarantee immediate housing. The amount of time applicants wait for a unit will depend on factors including vacancy rates and eligibility requirements.

Applicants will be notified of their waitlist status by the end of July through the email address associated with their RentCafe account.

For those with questions, in-person assistance remains available at the Housing Alliance HTX office, located at 2640 Fountain View. A dedicated public housing waitlist customer service line at 832-446-1611 will remain open through 6 p.m. Friday, July 10.
