Shelter-in-place order lifted for residents near large structure fire in NW Houston

HOUSTON – The shelter-in-place order that was issued for residents in northwest Houston on Wednesday has been lifted.

The order was issued due to a large structure fire at 5811 Decker Road, near Beltway 8 and US 290. The order was lifted at about 8:15 p.m.

Commuters were asked to avoid travel in the area until the fire is contained.

Due to the release of hazardous materials, the Houston Fire Department advised residents north of Clay Road, west of Fairbanks North Houston, south of US 290 and east of Beltway 8 to close all windows, doors and exterior vents. They are also asking residents to turn off their air conditioning units and isolate themselves in an interior room. They also said to try to seal the door to the shelter room with plastic sheeting and duct tape.

An electric pump caught fire at the Intercontinental Bearing Supply Company when a worker was transferring a chemical, according to authorities.

The worker was taken to the hospital with burns to both arms. There is no word on his condition at this time.
