A man is dead after being shot by a Houston police officer Monday night.
According to reports, the man was shot after he pointed a weapon at officers while they were attempting to take him into custody.
The shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. at a facility in the 9600 block of Yuppondale Drive.
According to police, the department’s Crime Suppression Team had been surveilling a suspect earlier in the day who was wanted on a charge of indecency with a child with sexual contact.
Police said officers located the suspect at his workplace using a drone. Officers then went to the location and spoke with a manager, who told them the suspect was in the back of the property.
Police said the suspect attempted to evade officers by jumping a back fence. He remained on the property, in a rear area of a facility where pets are cared for.
Two HPD units, including a K-9 handler and Crime Suppression Team officers, entered the area and attempted to negotiate with the suspect.
According to police, the suspect eventually went into a room and turned off the light.
When officers made entry into the room, police said the suspect produced a weapon. Officers ordered him to put the weapon down.
A police K-9 was then released, and investigators said the suspect made a motion that officers believed was an attempt to injure the dog.
Officers opened fire, striking the suspect two to three times in the body, according to police.
Officers immediately provided CPR to the suspect. Houston Fire Department personnel responded and pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
The investigation into the officer-involved shooting remains ongoing.
