If you shop at Walmart and have ever tried to tap your card or phone at checkout, there’s some good news. That option is finally on the way.

Walmart announced Friday that Tap to Pay is coming to Walmart and Sam’s Club stores across the U.S., giving customers another way to pay without inserting or swiping a card.

According to Walmart, the rollout starts Aug. 24 at select locations before expanding nationwide.

So, what’s changing?

Once Tap to Pay is available at your store, you’ll be able to hold an eligible contactless credit or debit card near the payment terminal to check out.

Walmart says customers will also be able to use eligible phones and smartwatches for contactless payments.

That means fewer steps at the register if you already use tap-to-pay technology when shopping at other stores.

When will my Walmart get it?

Not everyone will see the change immediately.

Walmart says Tap to Pay will start rolling out at select Walmart and Sam’s Club locations on Aug. 24.

The company has not said which stores will get the upgrade first.

The goal, according to Walmart, is to have Tap to Pay available at all Walmart and Sam’s Club locations in the U.S. by the end of 2026.

What about Walmart gas stations?

Those are coming later.

Walmart says Tap to Pay is expected to reach its fuel stations by mid-2027.

Does this mean Apple Pay is coming to Walmart?

This is where things get a little less clear.

Walmart says customers will be able to use eligible contactless cards, phones and smartwatches. The company also says eligible Walmart, Sam’s Club and OnePay cards will work through supported digital wallets.

In Friday’s announcement, Walmart did not specifically name Apple Pay, Google Pay or Samsung Wallet.

So, while Tap to Pay is officially coming, Walmart has not yet spelled out which individual digital wallets shoppers will be able to use when the rollout begins.

What about Walmart Pay and Scan & Go?

Those aren’t going anywhere.

According to Walmart, customers will still have access to Walmart Pay.

Sam’s Club members will also still be able to use Scan & Go, which lets shoppers scan their items and pay through the Sam’s Club app without going through a traditional checkout line.

For shoppers who have been waiting to tap their card or device at Walmart, the first stores will start getting the option Aug. 24, with the nationwide rollout expected to be finished by the end of the year.
