If you own a Ninja Creami, you may want to take a closer look at how you’re cleaning it.

A viral TikTok is prompting some Creami owners to inspect their machines after a woman claimed to have found what appeared to be maggots inside the lid of her ice cream maker.

According to TODAY, the woman said she discovered something resembling a maggot after eating ice cream she had made in her Creami. She and her partner checked the ingredients she had used, including milk, almond milk and protein powder, but said they couldn’t find the source.

They eventually turned their attention to the machine.

The woman said she cleans her Creami regularly but was shocked to find what appeared to be maggots in an area of the appliance that she said was difficult to access and clean.

The video quickly went viral, prompting other Creami owners to share their own concerns about buildup inside parts of the machine.

Some social media users said they had found mold or other residue on their Creami lids, while others pushed back on the viral claims and suggested the issue could be due to improper cleaning or food left inside the appliance.

The viral posts prompted Ninja to remind Creami owners about proper cleaning procedures.

According to TODAY, Ninja recommends thoroughly cleaning the machine after use, including the paddle, pint, outer bowl and lids.

The company also recommends running warm water through the lid’s paddle-release lever and drain holes and removing and cleaning the gray rubber seal underneath the lid.

Ninja also recommends wiping the spindle underneath the control panel after every use.

The company told media outlets that product quality and safety are its top priorities and that it reached out directly to the consumer involved to better understand what happened and review proper cleaning instructions.

The company encourages Creami owners with questions to contact customer service.

The viral video does not establish that Ninja Creami machines are generally infested with maggots, and there is no indication that the appliance itself causes maggots to form.

Still, the incident is a reminder to thoroughly clean and dry kitchen appliances, particularly areas where food or moisture can become trapped.

For Creami owners, that could mean taking a few extra minutes after each use to clean the removable parts and pay attention to areas that aren’t immediately visible.

Because nobody wants their homemade ice cream to come with an unexpected protein boost.
