HOUSTON – As Houston students prepare to head back to class, local law enforcement is making campus security a top priority.
The Houston ISD Police Department, Houston Police Department and several local agency partners are set to announce Project Safe Start Tuesday morning — a multi-agency initiative focused on increasing security presence on and around HISD campuses for the 2026-2027 school year. The announcement is scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4, at HISD Police Headquarters, located at 3500 Tampa St. in Houston.
Expected to speak at the announcement are HISD Police Department Chief Shamara Garner and Houston Police Department Assistant Chief Yasar Bashir. Additional participating agencies include Harris County Precincts 1, 2, 5, 6 and 7.
Officials are expected to outline specific security measures being put in place in and around HISD campuses, as well as detail how partner agencies will collaborate throughout the school year. Further details about the initiative are expected to be released at todays press conference.
