HOUSTON – As dangerous heat settles across the Houston area, the City of Houston is opening cooling centers to give residents a safe place to escape the high temperatures.
The Lansdale Community Center on Roos Road is one of several locations that will serve as a cooling center during the extreme heat. City officials say the centers are open to anyone who needs relief from the heat, especially people without air conditioning or a safe place to cool off.
The City of Houston’s Office of Emergency Management has an online map showing cooling center locations across the city, making it easier for residents to find the closest site.
Health officials are also urging everyone to take precautions to prevent heat-related illnesses.
Know the warning signs of heat illness, including:
- Dizziness
- Headaches
- Muscle cramps
- Nausea
- Heavy sweating
To stay safe during the heat wave, officials recommend:
- Drink plenty of water throughout the day.
- Limit outdoor work and exercise to the early morning or evening hours.
- Wear lightweight, loose-fitting clothing.
- Never leave children, older adults, or pets unattended inside a parked vehicle, even for a short time.
- Check on older neighbors, young children, and others who may be at greater risk for heat-related illness.
- If someone begins showing signs of heat stroke—such as confusion, vomiting, loss of consciousness, or stops sweating despite the heat—call 9-1-1 immediately.
