HOUSTON – Members of Houston’s LGBTQ+ community, family members, friends, and advocates are expected to gather Tuesday evening for a vigil honoring a transgender woman, Persia Amarra Conway, after her body was found near Brays Bayou last week.
Organizers say the event is about more than remembrance. They hope the gathering will help keep public attention focused on an investigation that remains active as detectives work to determine the circumstances surrounding Conway’s death.
According to Houston police, people walking along Brays Bayou discovered Conway’s body on the morning of May 25. Authorities have released few details since the discovery and have not announced any arrests.
In the days following the discovery, community members have shared messages of support online and organized the vigil to celebrate Conway’s life while calling for answers.
Organizers say the event will include remarks from advocates, a moment of reflection, and an appeal for anyone with information about the case to come forward.
People who knew Conway, along with some community advocates, have described the circumstances surrounding her death as suspicious. While investigators continue their work, organizers say they want to create a space for healing while also raising awareness about the case.
Community leaders say the vigil is intended to bring people together in solidarity, honor Conway’s memory, and encourage anyone with knowledge of the case to speak with investigators.
Houston police continue to investigate. Anyone with information related to the case is urged to contact investigators.
