Gas prices across the country continue climbing as tensions tied to the conflict involving Iran push fuel costs higher, and now the Trump administration says it is open to suspending the federal gas tax to help Americans save money at the pump.
The national average price for a gallon of regular gasoline has now reached $4.52, according to officials cited Sunday.

Speaking on NBC’s “Meet the Press,” Chris Wright said the administration is “open to all ideas,” including temporarily suspending the federal gasoline tax, which currently adds about 18 cents per gallon.
The discussion comes as drivers nationwide continue feeling the impact of rising fuel costs tied to global instability and oil market concerns.
At the same time, major retailers are rolling out gas savings programs aimed at helping consumers offset higher prices.
Amazon recently launched its “Fuel Up Fridays” program, allowing Prime members to save 20 cents per gallon every Friday through the end of May at participating BP, Amoco, and ampm stations.
Meanwhile, Walmart is offering Walmart+ members 10 cents off per gallon at participating Exxon, Mobil, and Walmart gas stations.
Even smaller discounts can add up over time for commuters.
For example, a driver traveling about 25 miles round-trip to work each day would drive roughly 12,500 miles annually for work alone. Saving just 10 cents per gallon could reduce yearly fuel costs by more than $50, not including additional personal driving.
Drivers can also find savings through free loyalty programs offered by major gas station chains and grocery stores such as Kroger and H-E-B, which often provide discounts ranging from 3 to 10 cents per gallon.
