Stolen checks, mail and counterfeit postal keys found during Houston game room bust

Federal investigators say a large-scale operation in Houston targeting illegal game rooms uncovered stolen mail, counterfeit postal keys, checks, and other evidence tied to mail theft and identity fraud investigations.

The U.S. Postal Inspection Service, along with several federal, state, and local agencies, conducted surge operations across southwest Houston focused on illegal activity connected to game rooms.

According to investigators, the operation involved personnel from the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, FBI, DEA, Texas Department of Public Safety, Sugar Land Police Department, and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities said investigators were initially tracking suspects accused of targeting USPS collection boxes and stealing mail. Some of those investigations eventually led agents to illegal game rooms operating in southwest Houston.

Investigators released video showing a black car pulling up next to a USPS collection box. A man is seen getting out of the vehicle and kneeling beside the box moments before agents move in and order him to the ground.

Over the course of the operation, postal inspectors conducted patrols, surveillance, interviews, and residential searches involving people suspected of mail theft, counterfeit postal equipment production, and other criminal activity.

Officials said the operation resulted in multiple arrests and generated new leads in ongoing investigations.

Investigators recovered stolen mail, checks, credit cards, IDs, USPS locks and keys, counterfeit postal keys, and other evidence connected to identity theft and fraud cases.

“These game rooms were used as hubs for illegal activities and when gambling intersects with stolen mail, firearms, and drugs, postal inspectors will step in to protect our communities,” Inspector in Charge Shameka Jackson said in a statement. “Our surge operations should put criminals on notice; you aren’t flying under the radar...you’re on it.”

In a separate investigation tied to the Memorial Park Post Office, authorities said three men were arrested following reports of forged checks, stolen mail, and identity theft.

Investigators said more than 80 pieces of stolen mail and nine postal keys were recovered in that case.

Officials said the coordinated effort was aimed at disrupting criminal activity affecting residents, businesses, and the integrity of the U.S. mail system.
