Man armed with butcher knife ignored police commands, advanced towards officers before fatal shooting, HPD says

HOUSTON – Houston police have released new details on the officer-involved shooting that left a man armed with a butcher knife dead in Southwest Houston.

According to a news release by the Houston Police Department, the incident occurred around 11:20 a.m. Wednesday at an apartment complex in the 6300 block of West Bellfort Avenue.

Officers responded to a call regarding a man in crisis.

When they arrived, they spoke with a woman who said her husband was inside their upstairs apartment, and he was armed with a knife.

She told officers he was making suicidal threats as well as threats toward police.

Authorities said officers then went upstairs and attempted to make contact with the man. He allegedly stood near the apartment doorway holding a knife.

Officers reportedly made verbal commands to drop the weapon, police said the man refused and began advancing toward officers.

At that point, three officers discharged their weapons, striking the suspect.

Paramedics with the Houston Fire Department responded to the scene and pronounced the man dead.

The identity of the deceased has not yet been released, pending notification of family members by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences.

The officers involved were not injured. All three are assigned to HPD’s South Gessner Patrol Division.

As is standard procedure in officer-involved shootings within city limits, the case is being reviewed by multiple departments within HPD and the Harris County District Attorney’s Office.
