Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said a 21-year-old woman and her 9-month-old baby were traveling eastbound in a sedan and pulled onto the left shoulder, possibly because of a significant traffic slowdown. Gonzalez said a 36-year-old driver then entered the left shoulder at a high rate of speed and rear-ended the sedan.

The mother and baby were taken to a hospital. Gonzalez said the mother is in fair condition and the baby is in critical but stable condition.

First responders remain on scene. Drivers are urged to avoid the area and use alternate routes.
