Drivers along Oats Road and U.S. 90 got an unexpected sight late Thursday night when a group of cows decided to take a midnight stroll.
Around 11:30 p.m., about 15 cows escaped from private property, prompting a response from the Houston Police Department and the Harris County Sheriff’s Office to help get them safely off the road.
Officers used emergency lights and sirens to guide the animals away from traffic as the cows were spotted walking along the roadway and grazing on nearby grass. At times, drivers had to slow down as police worked to keep both motorists and the animals safe.
The cows’ owner arrived in a pickup truck, along with several dogs, to help wrangle the herd. After a short-lived adventure, the animals were successfully guided back onto the property.
Once home, the cows were last seen cooling off with some water, seemingly unfazed by the attention they’d drawn.
One nearby resident told KPRC 2 this isn’t the first time cows have escaped in the area, saying he’s seen police respond to similar situations before when livestock wandered too close to passing cars.
No injuries were reported, and traffic returned to normal after the herd was secured.
