Sheriff Ed Gonzalez said Ramirez was traveling north in the southbound lanes in the 21600 block of Tomball Parkway near Jones at about 1:39 a.m. when his vehicle struck a southbound car.

Ramirez sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said. The driver of the second vehicle suffered major injuries and was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Deputies and wrecker drivers worked quickly to pull the injured driver from the burning vehicle, Sheriff Gonzalez said, praising their swift actions.

Three deputies sustained minor injuries while attempting the rescue, but they were evaluated by emergency medical personnel at the scene and were not transported to a hospital.
