HPD: Violent carjacking ends in deadly crash in Downtown Houston

Suspect faces murder charge after deadly carjacking at Travis and Lamar Streets

HOUSTON – A violent carjacking ended in a deadly crash in downtown Houston, police said.

Investigators said a woman was sitting in her car on Travis Street and Lamar Street just before 1 a.m. Saturday.

They said she got out of her car believing a family member was involved in a disturbance nearby.

Police said one of the men involved jumped into her SUV and tried to steal it.

“Her 12-year-old son was in the passenger seat, so our complainant went back and tried to stop him from leaving with the vehicle. Our suspect used force against her, shoved her out of the car and as he was driving off, we believe struck her,” said Sgt. Thomas Fendia.

The child managed to escape from the passenger’s side before the suspect sped off.

Police said the man clipped a Toyota pickup, then slammed into a Kia Soul, causing it to roll over.

The driver of the Kia died at the scene.

The suspect was taken to Memorial Hermann hospital with minor injuries.

The child was not hurt.

The mother was injured but stayed on scene to help in the investigation.

The Harris County District Attorney’s Office accepted a murder charge in the case.
