East Houston man riding bicycle killed after being hit by SUV

Driver not charged after cooperating with investigators; police determine driver had right of way

HOUSTON – A man in was killed after being struck by an SUV while riding a bicycle in east Houston, according to police and fire officials.

At around 10:40 p.m. Tuesday night, HPD officers and HFD crews responded to reports of vehicle crashing into a pedestrian riding a bicycle along N Wayside Drive in East Houston.

Upon arrival, first responders found the male bicyclist suffering from critical injuries. He was pronounced dead at the scene by HFD personnel.

Investigators said the driver of the SUV remained at the scene and cooperated with authorities.

According to HPD, video evidence from the crash indicates the bicyclist attempted to cross Wayside Drive against the right of way. Police say the SUV driver appeared to have the right of way and did not see the bicyclist until it was too late to avoid the collision.

No charges have been announced at this time. The incident remains under investigation.

Police urge both drivers and cyclists to remain alert and obey traffic signals, especially along busy roadways.
