Katy Freeway at Wilcrest Drive reopened after bomb threat caused shutdown

The Katy Freeway feeder roads have now been reopened after a caller reported that a bomb was inside of a car on the road, causing stoppages.

Houston Police Department officials responded to the scene.

A caller contacted authorities at around 10:45 a.m., saying that they heard from someone else that there was an explosive device in a car.

The frontage roads at North Wilcrest Drive were closed down. The eastbound lanes of the freeway at Dairy Ashford Road were also temporarily closed off.

The vehicle in question, a yellow pickup truck, was located in the 11000 block of the Katy Freeway near City Centre.

After thoroughly inspecting the truck, authorities determined that there was no credible threat of a bomb in the vehicle.

The vehicle was towed to a nearby gas station for further inspection, allowing all impacted roads to reopen.

After the scene had cleared, HPD officials said the situation was handled carefully because of the lives that were put at risk.

“Obviously, with [the truck] being so close to a major freeway and the overpass... Had there have been something in there that would’ve detonated, obviously that could’ve been very catastrophic,” HPD Cpt. Tim Trometer said in an interview following the incident.

The driver of the truck has been detained. Any criminal charges are pending the investigation.

After the incident, authorities said they are continuing to investigate the situation.
