Man shoots himself after robbery at Papa Johns, standoff with HPD

Houston police say a man shot himself early Thursday morning after robbing a Papa Johns and leading officers to a nearby motel.

It happened around 12:10 a.m. at a Papa Johns near SH-6 and Richmond Avenue in west Houston. Police say they responded to an aggravated robbery in progress at the pizza shop.

When officers arrived, employees told them the suspect had fled across the street to the Intown Suites motel.

As officers searched for him, they reported hearing two gunshots. Moments later, officers located the suspect and tried to get him to surrender.

During the standoff, police say the man shot himself in the torso.

He was taken to a nearby hospital and is expected to survive, according to HPD.
