How prepared is Houston for hurricane season? New survey breaks it down

With hurricane season just weeks away, a new survey is shedding light on how prepared Houstonians really are for the storms ahead.

The Houston Population Research Center released findings from its Disaster Preparedness and Attitudes study, based on a survey of more than 5,350 residents conducted in spring 2024.

According to the report:

• 58% of residents said they felt either somewhat or very well prepared for a disaster.
• On average, people had taken about 4 out of 10 recommended preparedness actions, such as securing emergency supplies or having a family communication plan.
• 70% of respondents said they worry at least somewhat about disasters in the area.
• 91% believe it’s at least somewhat likely a disaster will impact them where they live.

The survey found that people with higher incomes felt more prepared and took more safety steps. Those who trusted local officials and believed disaster prep works were also more likely to take action.
