La Marque man fires gun at officer, landlord during eviction notice

A La Marque man is behind bars after shooting at an officer and a landlord while he was being served an eviction notice.

At 1 p.m. on Monday, the La Marque Police Department responded to a call in the 2300 block of Rosalee in La Marque. The Galveston County JP 3 Constable’s Office was attempting to serve an eviction notice at an apartment when a suspect on a bicycle arrived and fired a handgun at a sergeant from the Constable’s Office and the landlord.

Around five shots were fired before the suspect fled the scene on a bicycle. Neither victim was struck by the gunfire.

The sergeant involved provided a description to the La Marque Police Department. Officers located the suspect in the 500 block of Bayou Road in La Marque. When officers attempted to apprehend him, the suspect abandoned his bicycle and fled on foot. The officers pursued and successfully apprehended the suspect, along with the firearm believed to have been used in the shooting.

The La Marque Police Department’s patrol officers, crime scene unit, and criminal investigation division responded to the original scene on Rosalee. They collected photographs and evidence and conducted multiple interviews with those involved and witnesses.

The suspect was identified as William Rudd, a 28-year-old male from La Marque.

Rudd faces charges of evading arrest with a $2,500 bond, aggravated assault with a deadly weapon with a $75,000 bond, and aggravated assault of a peace officer with a $75,000 bond.

The La Marque Police Department expressed gratitude that their law enforcement colleagues from the Galveston County JP 3 Constable’s Office were unharmed and able to return home safely.
