HOUSTONAnime fans probably already know this, but in case they didn’t, Texas is one of the best states to be in if you’re into cosplay and attending anime conventions!

A recent survey compared some of the biggest states in the U.S. to analyze cosplay interests and anime/comic book conventions. Researchers also looked into the number of upcoming anime conventions, as well as, cosplay communities in each state.

Their findings led researchers to name Texas as the very best for cosplay fans as well as having the highest number of anime conventions in 2024. The Lone Star State also has the largest number of cosplay stores and the second most active cosplay community.

This does not surprise Deneice Leigh, founder/chairman of Anime Matsuri, the largest convention in Texas (second largest in the U.S.), and owner of Anime Bar in Sugar Land.

“The anime and cosplay community has done astonishing here in Texas, and it is more than an honor to be part of this growing scene,” Leigh tells KPRC 2 digital producer Ahmed Humble in an email. “Hosting the largest anime convention in the South and among the largest in North America, we’ve seen this community flourish before our eyes.

“Our bar, The Anime Bar, is another place for fans to meet up, cosplay, watch anime, and enjoy what they love about our scene throughout the year,” Leigh added. “Texas is thriving as a cosplay and anime destination for enthusiasts nationwide. It’s exciting and wonderful!”

Houston-based cosplayers like Joey G., agreed with how strong the cosplay community is here, which she didn’t expect when she first moved to The Space City.

“Not originally being from Texas, I was a little taken aback by how huge and popular both the anime and cosplay community is out here!” she said. “Being a cosplayer, I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to continue enjoying events and collaborate in Houston. It’s amazing how diverse, inclusive, and supportive it is. Especially given the opportunity to work at Anime Bar! I’m totally in my element here.”
