Long queues and overnight camping at IRS Center ends in closure, uncertainty for taxpayers

The Internal Revenue Service Taxpayer Assistance Center located at the 8700 block of South Gessner Road faced disruptions on Saturday morning.

KPRC 2′s T.J. Parker interviewed individuals waiting in line, who shared their experiences of attempting to verify their identity in order to receive their tax refunds.

Due to IRS regulations, this verification process had to be done in person, leading to long queues and some individuals camping overnight. However, the day took a turn when a confrontation occurred between two women, prompting the center to close for the remainder of the day. As a result, many appointments were rescheduled for May, leaving numerous individuals frustrated and in need of financial assistance.

An IRS field assistant addressed the crowd, informing them that appointments would resume on Monday, with walk-ins accepted on Tuesday. Despite attempts to seek clarification on the situation, the assistant directed inquiries to the IRS media department. The center remained closed for the remainder of the day, leaving many taxpayers uncertain about their refund status.
