40-year-old charged with murder in chase, crash which killed City of Sugar Land employee

SUGAR LAND, Texas – A 40-year-old native of Colombia was arrested and charged with murder following a police chase which ended in a crash that killed a City of Sugar Land employee.

The crash happened on Wednesday in the westbound lanes of U.S. Highway 90A at Gillingham Lane just before 10:30 a.m.

Sugar Land police said Missouri City police were pursuing Overeth Riascos Barahona, 40, along with two other men following a call of a burglary at a home.

Police said Barahona was driving a Toyota Highlander when the vehicle collided with a City of Sugar Land truck, driven by Joseph Aponte, 56, of Needville. Aponte died at the scene, and the three men in the Highlander were transported to a local hospital.

Sugar Land police said Barahona was released from the hospital Saturday and taken to the Sugar Land Police Department for further investigation before he is transported to the Fort Bend County Jail. Missouri City police arrested and charged the other two men with burglary.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement placed a detainer on Barahona. Sugar Land police said Barahona has a lengthy criminal history.
